Research is important, even for a work of speculative fiction. However, it can sometimes be a bit of a rabbit hole. The past week, for example, I end up spending far more time than expected learning a lot more about the Crimea and the Black Sea in ancient times than I probably need. Fascinating, though, so no regrets.
